Can not break into Medical device sales even with great sales numbers and Masters Degree?

medical devices
Dominick Leone asked:

I have a Masters Degree from Georgetown University in Physiology and Biophysics, 2 yrs of medical school at the University of South Florida College of Medicine as an MD, 2 yrs B2B experience and 2 yrs of account management.

I have a few contacts in orthopedic device companies, but every time I see an ad on Monster, Hotjobs, or even company websites, I seem to get to the hiring manager too late. Last time I contacted the Area manager, he had already hired, even though the company just posted the job on their website 3 days before.

ANY HINTS? What am I doing wrong … Why do I seem to be a dollar short and a day late?

Thanks!!!!

Try going directly to the companies or talking to one of their existing sales reps to get an inside interview. More often than not, the networking created by the sales reps fill positions prior to them being posted. It’s just the way it is.

must be your resume. get all the resume advice you can get. i searched for a job for 3 months. redid my resume (from 3 pages to 1) and posted the new resume last monday. i start my new job this coming monday. look closely at your resume and edit it. that may be the problem. another thing is that they may feel you are overqualified for a sales job, and may think you will leave to finish med school or go for a better job after they hire you. so you may NOT want to tout all of your education and experience for a sales job. your resume has to reflect the feeling that ever since you could walk all you ever wanted to do is sell medical devices.

Who knows how long the job has been avaialble before being posted – even three days is a long time to wait. Since there is a limited number of companies that are looking to hire such positions, why not go to each site, find their careers page, and bookmark them, being sure to check them daily. As well, you can send a good letter of interest to their hiring managers stating that you are interested in working for the company and ask to be considered should future opportunties ariise.

You can also check relevant trade organizations’ sites as they often list career opportunities, and consider joining such an association for the social networking opportunities you may be missing.
